The Quirks of Regeneration – The Doctor’s Character Arc Part 3

Right, it’s time to bring the long song to it’s crescendo with the third (and final!) part of my discussion of the Doctor’s regenerations. Check out Part One and Part Two by the way. When we last left off the Eleventh Doctor’s time had come to a close with the definitive end of their regeneration cycle, only for the Time Lords to dig deep and offer up a literal new lease on life. Much in the same way the Time War reverberated through the regenerations that followed, I also believe this one act is still having an effect on the Doctors to this day and beyond. It all boils down to one simple question, a question of identity. With a new regeneration cycle are they still the same person? Are they the latest in a long line or a starting over from scratch? WHO are they?

The Quirks of Regeneration – The Doctor’s Character Arc Part 2

So, the kind and gentle approach didn’t work, grabbing the universe by the throat and trying to throttle it into submission certainly didn’t work, how would this new Doctor tackle the grim 80s? Why with a plan of cause. The Seventh is well known as the chess master and for good reason. When we first meet him he’s quieter and more unassuming than his predecessor, he’s also more than willing to play the fool much like his second incarnation. It doesn’t take long though for his Machiavellian streak to start showing. This is not a Doctor who stumbles into trouble, but personally seeks it out. Looking at the Doctor’s life up until this point it’s hard not to read this incarnation as the one where he’s finally had enough and is determined to sort out the universe once and for all. Unfortunately it all comes to a rather unceremonious end, but I suppose that’s kind of fitting in an ironic way.

Discussing the Third Doctor

The Third Doctor’s era marks one of the most significant changes to the status quo in the show’s long history. No longer a wanderer in the fourth dimension, this Doctor is stuck in one time and place for the majority of their tenure and have to deal with things no other incarnation has had to deal with, not on a consistent basis at least. They’re surrounded by an extended cast of characters beyond that of their chosen travelling companions and, possibly most frightening of all, they have to get a job! These are the days of UNIT and cementing the Doctor’s role as Earth’s defender.
